Although lockdowns caused disruptions across Australia, Aussies stuck at home invested in more solar energy than ever, lifting the uptake of solar panels to 39% from the pervious year. According to SunWiz, that’s almost 3,000MW of new solar installations going up on homes throughout 2020.

To put that into perspective, the electricity generated by these new solar panel installations was able to power 1.9 million homes.

In addition, 2020 ended with a bang, with 324MW of all solar installs registered in December.

Solar System Size Choices

As the price of solar continues to fall, SunWiz noted that through 2020 both residential and commercial solar customers were opting for larger system sizes. The average system size selection for 2020 came out at 9kW.

In previous years the 6.6kW has been the preferred model size. This shows that solar customers are looking for a more sustainable lifestyle.

As explained by Warwick Johnston, managing director of SunWiz, “As occurs each year, average system size also skyrocketed in December, as solar companies rushed to complete commercial installations before the STC subsidy reduced.”
