What size system should I get?

Whilst Sydney does not have as much sun as some of the other major cities in Australia, on average the 3.9 hours of peak sun a day will provide ample power to most homes. A small 1.5kW solar system will result in approximately 5.8kWh of electricity on average per day, whilst a large 5kW system will generate around 19kWh a day, enough for most households of 3-4 people.

What rebates are available?

The current rebate available is from the Federal Government, which is generally given as a discount on the price of installation from your installer. There is a small amount of paperwork to do, but the solar company you deal with should be able to guide you through this process. By claiming the rebate this way, you can get a direct discount from the installer and don’t have to worry about claiming the rebate yourself at a later date.

The rebate is not means tested, can only be claimed once per property but there is no limit to how many properties you can claim it on.

What feed-in tariff is available?

Although New South Wales no longer has a guaranteed feed in tariff, most retailers still provide a relatively high rate for the electricity you feed back into the grid.

Rates are subject to change and vary across different retailers, be sure to check with your retailer about the rate which you are eligible to receive.

With daytime NSW electricity rates up to 35c/kWh, offsetting daytime usage with your own solar power is effectively like having a 35c Feed in Tariff. The other factor that’s cushioning the blow of the lower FIT is the fact that panel prices globally have plummeted over the last year whilst at the same time electricity prices continue to rise.
