A Life On Our Planet
Acting as a final “witness statement’ A life on our planet explores how the earth has rapidly changed over just the time frame of Attenborough’s lifespan.
Born in 1926, Attenborough reflects how his passion for the natural world has also turned into horror as we pass through ‘a series of one-way doors, bringing irreversible change’ to our planet.
In the sobering and wonder-filled film, flashes of spectacular animal footage are overlayed with hard images of the human population expanding, forests being flattened and carbon emissions being released into the air.
In a soft voice choked back by the onset of tears, Attenborough comments “ We are facing nothing less than the collapse of the living world- the very thing that gave birth to our civilization. The thing we rely upon for every element of the lives we lead.”
The Message
In an interview with 60 minutes, Anderson Cooper asks the legendary wildlife filmmaker, “you call the film a witness statement, a witness statement is given when a crime has been committed?” Attenborough quickly replies with “well a crime has been committed.”
Attenborough goes on to say “if we act now we can put it right” if only we “learn to work with nature rather than against it.”
So what is the key message here? How can we undo the wrongs done to our planet?
As a start, Attenborough highlights that we must replace all fossil fuels with solar, wind, wave and geothermal energy.
For food, large no-fishing zones need to be established to give fish stocks a chance to regenerate.
On land, we need to reduce our farming and agricultural lands by half to give wildlife enough space for biodiversity mechanisms to recover. This can be done by minimizing the amount of meat we consume and switch to a more sustainable plant-based diet.
Although Attenborough’s solutions are not new, the hope is that with the support of such a public figure real change can finally be actioned across the world starting with how we source our energy.
