Tesla Solar Battery Review

Last updated November 2026

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is an all-in-one home battery with a built-in solar inverter. It launched in Australia in August 2024, replacing the Powerwall 2. It stores your excess solar so you can use it at night, and it can keep your home running during a blackout.

What’s new with Powerwall 3?

  • Built-in solar inverter: new solar panels can connect directly to the Powerwall, so you may not need a separate solar inverter.
  • Works with existing solar: it can also be added to a home that already has solar and an inverter.
  • More power: it can deliver up to 11.04 kW continuous, configurable to 5 kW or 10 kW. That’s enough to run more of your home at once, including large appliances.
  • Expandable: add up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units (13.5 kWh each) to one Powerwall 3, or link more than one Powerwall 3.

Powerwall FAQs – General

No. Powerwall 3 has a built-in solar inverter, so new solar panels can connect to it directly. If you already have solar, your installer will advise whether to keep your existing inverter.

No. It can charge from the grid, but you’ll usually get the most value when it stores your own excess solar power.

It can, if it’s installed with backup capability. This needs extra components in your switchboard, so ask your installer what’s included in your quote.

Yes. Powerwall 3 can be expanded with additional units if you need more storage. Your installer can size the system to suit your home.

Many Australian VPP programs accept Powerwall. Ask your energy retailer or installer which programs are available in your area.

It doesn’t need routine maintenance. You can monitor it in the Tesla app, and your installer and/or Tesla can help if something isn’t working as expected.

Powerwall 3 comes with a 10-year limited warranty. Check Tesla’s current Australian warranty document for the full terms, and ask your installer to confirm what’s covered.

Powerwall 3 replaced Powerwall 2 in Australia. Existing Powerwall 2 systems are still covered by their original warranty.
